Fighter Concept + Now with WIP images + Desc by Pinakes Fighter Concept + Now with WIP images + Desc by Pinakes
Let me sidetrack from anime stuff for a bit ...

This is originally made for CGMA class Vehicle & Mech Design by Paul Christopher. It was a fun class btw :)

I though it might be interesting and it could answer some questions so I'm uploading the dev process down here, including feedback sketch by the lecturer (the 4th image):

VehMech Wk1 Fighter Thumbs by Pinakes VehMech Wk1 Fighter Comp 1 by Pinakes VehMech Wk2 Dev Shots by Pinakes VehMech Wk2 FEEDBACK by Pinakes VehMech Wk3 Process by Pinakes

If you're lost on what's going on with these images:
1. The thumbs from the assignment brief.
2. Rough of one of the thumbs, that's no. 25 (by itself is a mix of 10, 16, and 21) - so it's a Zerg meets wasp meets aircraft at this stage.
3. Development, I was so intense on making the aircraft more aggressive, it ended up more like enemy alien ship by the end of it.
4. And so, the feedback came in. This was actually during a live Q&A session so there are many more talks and discussion than just those texts.
5. New dev to make the plane less aggressive, more run of the mill human plane. I started by mixing parts from all that I already have and adjust from there.

So to answer the question, while being a double-decker like Yukikaze's FA-2 (the structure is different btw, I got the model on my desk in the first place), I'd pay the tribute more to Zerg. And wasp and eagle moth. Oh and, probably NCC-1701-D too, Rokushou almost got that one with the 'saucer separation' thing. If there's anything from Yukikaze, the bottom rear part is highly inspired by MAVE's (in turn also probably from VF-19/VF-11). The many holes around the planes are vernier (the usage inspired by Macross, the design taken from space shuttle).

The rest of the tidbits:
- Nose from Boeing Bird of Prey
- Nose pod from F-14
- Gun and aerial refueling port from F-16
- Railgun probably some Gundam meets Macross meets whatever
- Paneling and actuator "bumps" on the control surfaces from F-22

I could be missing some more but those are more or less what I remember atm. Btw you know, the tilt of the canopy means the pilot can't use normal HUD (and thus isn't there), let's just assume it's HMD on the helmet lol.

Thanks! I've actually toned down the sweeping feel of it compared to earlier dev but good to see it's still there :)

I cannot thank you enough for this. Might try my hand at a 3D model of one of these.

Yeah, but I can't save it to my faves as long as it's in stash. And I try not to download my DA faves because otherwise I'd eat up a huge chunk of the space on my hard drive.

Thank you for sharing this process!  There's a lot here, but it all makes sense.  This is really good food for thought regarding my own "process" - dive in and see what comes out.  Thanks again!!!

Oh man, ARE they!  I'd love to take that class - learning how to chill out and relax, exploring design options in a measured way - that's worth its weight in gold.  Luckily, between your sketches and the text attached, I can piece together your process.

Thanks again!

Yup, the class was fun. Throwing questions and trying out shapes to see what my lecturer would say were really priceless. Getting a professional to comment on your stuff is indeed very useful (as I know I can trust his words). He was very objective too, all in all a particular design may or may not work on different projects depending on the intentions, what you're working on, and for who.

Awesome!!

This design is inspired by some fighter aircraft of "Yukikaze"anime? The main structure is very similar.

FA-2? A little missed though. I'd say Zerg and NCC-1701 closer to this :) MAVE got part on the bottom rear.
(btw just updated the post with WIP pictures and stuff, you might want to see it)

I like the FA-2. I regard the shape as something we won't probably see in western entertainment media for quite a loong time. The designer (Yamashita Ikuto?) must've been having a fun time XD
If I'm basing the idea from that plane, this is going to be shaped quite differently though :)

So much vertical-ness. I imagine the bottom half is for extra missiles/bombs and thrusters (maybe for space) and can be jettisoned/detached to make a raiden-esque craft with only autocannons and atmospheric capabilities. This is all just speculation so don't be offended if my ideas are completely different than your intention for the design.

Didn't thought of it at first but it sure crossed my mind on the end. "This looks like it can do saucer separation" :)

Can just imagine myself sitting back in the cockpit enjoying the mountains and clouds while my destination await for me. By the way, which one of those holes is the refuel input?
